LEARNING GOALS

Kickstart Week is a set of related workshops that will prepare you to design for and teach in online and hybrid settings. Each day focuses on a different set of skills and pedagogies.

This day's workshop will emphasize the following:

  1. Assessments and Rubrics: Explore alternative authentic assessments and how rubrics can be made to ease the grading process.
  2. Writing in Online Courses: Extend student learning by incorporating writing assignments of various levels of complexity.
  3. Academic Integrity: Promote academic integrity in an online classroom through various tools and types of assignments.

Major Topics: Assessments and Academic Integrity

Day Two of Kickstart Week will focus on creating assessments and aligning them to the course learning outcomes/objectives.  Several alternative types of assessments will be discussed and evaluated for use with the learning outcomes of your online course.  Chris Manion (CSTW) will present on strategies to identify ways to incorporate various kinds of writing as assessments and activities.  Creating rubrics for your assessments to better communicate grading criteria and expectations will also be discussed, and tools for creating rubrics will be explored. We will examine issues of academic integrity and steps instructors can take when using traditional and alternative assessments online.

Following each segment, you will have opportunity to practice what you learned with guidance from experts. By the end of the day, you will have had the opportunity to consider which of multiple forms of assessment are appropriate for your course, as well as building versions of those assessments in online formats.

Attendees are encouraged to register for and attend all four days: Day One - Day Two - Day Three - Day Four. They have been designed to provide an integrative introduction to a complete process of online course design.
